You have been named supreme ruler of the universe. Your first order of business is creating and instituting a holiday or festival in your honor. What day of the year is your holiday? What special events will take place? Describe YOU DAY in as great a detail as you can muster: the special foods we’ll consume, the decorations we’ll use…everything.
Okay, first and foremost, as I have confessed in numerous posts, I am an introvert. Being such, do you think I would really want a day dedicated to me? If there was such a day, I would want to find some deep, dark hole far in the dense forest and hide out for a day or two; hoping and praying everyone just gave up on the idea and went back to their normal lives!
There is a reason people who have special days in their honor only receive them after they are dead. I’m sure some dictator has established a day in his/her honor. They may have established an entire week or month or year, for all I know. That would seem to fit a tyrant to a tee. Tyrants tend to be egomaniacal, self-lovers after all.
Delusions of grandeur notwithstanding, I think for most people, a day dedicated in their honor would feel a bit creepy at best. But, if I were to have a day in my honor (hey, I can be selfish if I want to be!), it would look something like this.
The day would be in the fall, say October (the month of my birth), during the time of reds, yellows, oranges and browns. The colors of Fall would make it festive in themselves.
The events would be varied. First, everyone would be required to shout War Eagle, Go Steelers, and Go Red Sox at least a thousand times throughout the day! Anyone refusing to do so would be banished to exile and their family would be made to pay retributions for their insolence and . . . oh, sorry, you see how dangerous such a thing can be!
Well, hmm, maybe we should skip all that then. Instead, it would be a day for people to celebrate themselves. A day to truly enjoy the blessings of life. No stress of having to pay for presents you cannot really afford or rubbing elbows with people you would just as soon not have to see! No, it would be a day to simply rejoice and relax. A day to be thankful without the turkey!
A day to rejoice over freedom, life and family. A day to give thanks for God’s grace as shown through Christ. A day to really be happy and content. Forget the rat race. Forget keeping up with the Joneses or Millers or (insert whatever name you wish here). It would be a day to reflect, meditate and think. A day to remember and write or do something creative. A day to engage the imagination and find our inner creativity and allow it to have a voice.
After all, most of us on a usual basis, take ourselves far too seriously anyway! It’s like It’s like the saying goes, don’t take yourself so seriously, no one else does! Relax. Enjoy. But not in a selfish way. Not in an Epicurean way. Rather, in a way that leads to humility, goodwill and thanks. If the world was invested more with these qualities, who knows, we may just see a remarkable difference!
So, go ahead, take your day. Watch that old movie you haven’t seen in many years. Go through those old photo albums and all the memories that go with it. Call that friend you haven’t spoken to in a while.
Above all, be thankful. Above all, be humble and show kindness to those around you.
That would not be such a bad day after all.
