Ode to an Avalanche . . .

You were caught in an avalanche. To be rescued, you need to make it through the night. What thought(s) would give you the strength to go through such a scary, dangerous situation?

Soft powder,

Like bits of cloud

swirl in my turbulent air.

Cold fog of breath

Christens my descent

on an immaculate slope of virgin white.

Frolicking wind,

flits playfully about me,

piercing its heart in stealth.

The mount heaves

I feel its surrender

the throes of a vanquished thing.

My heart stings

against a mass of heaving flesh

the last violent assault is hurled

in pangs of baleful death, and

My heart stings.

A shroud

an icy pall cast its shadow

grips me beneath its barren shade.

cold that burns like fire

weight that crushes to the soul.

quiet ringing sharply in my ears

deafening every screaming sense.

Free thoughts

torturous, taunting things

thawing in the deep tundra.

Calm of darkness,

as all about me is black

held captive by hellacious fury

thoughts of descent rise, in the

Calm of darkness.
